Oh don't worry, I'm not worried.
The playerbase has already dropped, and it will drop more if they keep treating "4 months" like a decorative suggestion instead of an actual commitment.
For long-lasting companies, keeping promises is one of the few real quality indicators. Anyone can sell hype. The hard part is not making your roadmap read like fan fiction a month later.
If they keep breaking their word repeatedly, then no, I don't think the game survives in the long run. Maybe not overnight, sure. Games usually don't explode dramatically, they just leak players slowly, like a boat everyone keeps insisting is "still basically fine" while their shoes are underwater.

And where exactly is said drop?

Looking at Steam charts, the trend is not exactly screaming "nothing to see here".
0.3 started at around 350k and bottomed out near 14.5k (need to look "closer" stats, 6-months window).
0.4 started at around 290k and, before the league is even over, is already sitting around 10k. I would not be shocked if it slides to roughly 7k by the end.
So yes, a league-to-league drop of around 15-20% is pretty big. That is not some microscopic rounding error you need a telescope to find.
And before someone does the usual forum backflip - yes, I know Steam charts are not the full playerbase. The point is the trend.
If anyone has better data, post it. I am genuinely interested. But "I feel like the playerbase is fine" is not data, that is just astrology for forum warriors.

The best part about Steam charts is we can make them mean whatever we want.
I think GGG is more concerned about full-release quality, content, timing, and promotional efforts than they are about how sad EA players might be because they have to wait another 4 weeks for an update.
No one will remember EA once the game goes F2P on release and all of our stash and characters are gonna be in a void-league come January. There is no way they let Standard league mingle with EA stuff after a busted temple league like this.
We're all just going to be that one person in town with a Kiwi pet, yelling about how GGG betrayed us when they promised an update in May 2026 and then released it in June. I will never forget this heinous transgression.

And now look at the poe1 players. Then try your argument against that game and you'll see what's wrong with your argument.
And just btw: learn the difference between 'drop' and 'natural decline'.

I noticed you didn't include 0.2, which was 246k peak, yet both leagues following topped that. Also the 10k low of current league occured after 4 months, while the 14k low of previous league occured after 3 months.
If you look at the player count of the current league after 3 months, the player count is roughly 14k, so the same as 0.3.
The only real difference here is one higher overall player count for one league, which isn't enough to imply a doomed downward spiral.
